The DiamondClean Smart toothbrush has been redesigned to separate brushing mode from the intensity. It connects to the iPhone with the Bluetooth connection and helps you improve your brushing experience than ever before. It contains new smart brush heads to meet different requirements and other little refinements that cause overall improvements.
This new Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart electric toothbrush will make your teeth healthier, whiter, and clean, but it is not cheap. And sometimes the app is more gimmicky than useful. Overall, still, you are going to get a better brushing experience and clean teeth.
The DiamondClean Smart electric toothbrush adopts design elements from its first DiamondClean, but it brings in both refined features and new features. This sleek brush has clean lines and the conventional appearance of the DiamondClean. But, rather than one button to turn it on and off, now it has 2 buttons.
The top button operates as off and on and the second button controls the intensity. There are LED series below the 2 button that denote the various brushing modes. There is a light-up based at the bottom that fits into a charger.
The new DiamondClean smart toothbrush is available in a range of colors like white, lunar blue, white-black-pink-gray. The white color variant has gold lettering on the top and silver accents. The combination of silver and gold is a somewhat weird selection, but on the bathroom counter, it appears elegant.
You can pop the brush head off the top in order to switch brush heads. And a small metal prong on the toothbrush base top keeps the brush in place. The brush heads of Sonicare toothbrushes need to be changed every 3 months.
Brush heads cost around $10 each and they are available in a range of various styles to meet different requirements. But on Amazon, you can often get them at a cheaper price in bulk. The brush heads are expensive, but each brush head lasts for quite a few months. And with the DiamondClean Smart model, the app will inform you when to replace your brush.
In general, the body of Philips Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush Bluetooth is a lot similar to the DiamondClean with no problems. Philips has been using this design for many years. The design is easy to hold, ergonomic, and it appears great on the countertop. It is all one perfect piece. There are no grooves, no little toothpaste build-up, and no mold. The toothbrush stays clean.
It contains 5 brushing modes. Each mode has a different intensity and duration to achieve particular brushing goals. Here are the modes: Clean, gum health, tongue care, white+, and deep clean+.
You can switch between modes by pressing the second button without turning your brush. Once you select a mode, press the power button and the brush get turned on. You can change the intensity by again pressing the power button.
Each brushing mode provides a different brushing intensity and time. For instance, clean mode lasts for 2-minutes, while the mode gum health adds extra time to let you pay attention specifically to the gums. As part of your general brushing routine, the clean mode and gum health mode are more useful compared to other modes. However, you will find other modes useful when you want to experience longer brushing or want to focus more on your front teeth.
It is good to have different brushing modes that can meet your wide range of brushing requirements. You can even take advice from a dentist to find out the best brushing modes on the basis of your teeth condition and where you may require improvement.
The DiamondClean Smart toothbrush also contains a new set of tongue care features. One of the tongue care modes particularly works together with the tongue care brush in order to ensure you are brushing your tongue too for getting the freshest breath. Previous DiamondClean models didn’t have this tongue care setup. It is new to the DiamondClean Smart Bluetooth toothbrush.
(3) Brushing experience (how to use Philips Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush)
This smart toothbrush functions quietly. It is not fully silent, but it is lower pitched compared to the original DiamondClean electric toothbrush. When you are brushing the teeth, the sound is almost inaudible outside of your bathroom
When using the DiamondClean smart toothbrush, despite which brush mode you select, brushing is separated into different sections so that you get your entire teeth cleaned. Here is how brushing is divided: Bottom left, bottom right, bottom middle, top left, top right, top middle. The brush will buzz before moving on to a new mode. Therefore, every tooth goes with a complete brushing when it is time to a new brush mode.
When you are brushing very hard, the base of the toothbrush will flash to prevent you from putting extreme pressure. Brushing very hard can cause damage to your gums. Therefore, this is a good feature if you are a person who doesn’t focus on how much pressure you are applying to the teeth while brushing.
When it comes to overall brushing experience, the Philips DiamondClean smart Bluetooth toothbrush has no parallel. Just 2-minutes of brushing with this toothbrush will make your teeth clean, shiny and brighter as if you have just been visited a dentist. There is a huge difference between how clean your teeth get by using a Sonicare electric toothbrush compared to cleaning with a manual toothbrush.
(4) Brush heads (Accessories)
DiamondClean Smart toothbrush comes with a selection of brush heads. The smart brush heads contain a little chip, which communicates with the toothbrush to let it know what type of brush head is fixed. Through this connection, the toothbrush automatically decides the optimal intensity and brushing mode to follow the brush head. If you want to change, you can change it.
The DiamondClean smart toothbrush also works along with dumb brush heads that don’t contain smart chip capabilities. You only have to choose the intensity and mode on your own.
Each smart brush head contains unique properties to deal with a particular problem in your mouth. There are brush heads for gum care, dental plaque control, and teeth whitening, all with unique brush hardness and designs. The gum care brush to take care of your gums is the softest of all the brush heads, while the whitening brush head and the plaque control brush head have harder bristles.
(5) Charging cup (How to charge Philips Sonicare DiamondClean)
Similar to the DiamondClean, the DiamondClean Smart toothbrush charges in a glass cup, which is connected to the charging base. It uses inductive charging. Thus, for charging Philips Sonicare DiamondClean smart, you simply stick it inside the cup. You can also use this cup to rinse the DiamondClean Smart. The charging cup does get goop of the toothpaste in it. So, wash it out on a daily basis.
When it comes to design, the cup has been slightly tweaked to be rounder compared to the cup that came with the earlier DiamondClean models. It is a high-quality thick glass cup that is like any drinking vessel.
While charging, the toothbrush contains some new features. It creates an audible sound when the toothbrush is placed in the charging cup so that you realize it is in the right position. And when the toothbrush is first stuck in the charger, the base will glow brighter. These changes are appreciated because it is very hard to know when the standard DiamondClean toothbrush is getting charged. With the DiamondClean smart toothbrush, you will have no confusion.
The charging cup technique is convenient and simple. You only have to drop the toothbrush into the charging cup after your brushing teeth session. However, it is not recommended to tuck away your toothbrush in a drawer or medicine closest as it is slightly bulky and it can be a hassle.
(6) Travel Charger
The travel charger is made by using a quality soft-coated plastic. Inside, it contains cut-outs for the brush and 2 extra brush heads. The travel charger is designed to keep and charge your DiamondClean Smart toothbrush while on a tour. Bottom of the travel charger contains a built-in cable. You can plug that cable into any USB-A port to charge. When it is not used, the cable tucks in below the plastic piece that covers it from sight. The travel charger that comes with the standard DiamondClean version does not contain a built-in cable.
While you can use this DiamondClean Smart toothbrush completely without the app, it is designed to be used with the app. Using Bluetooth, the toothbrush connects to your iPhone and you can notice how you are brushing the teeth and making progress in real time, with the app.
Just open the app, take out the DiamondClean Smart from the charger, and begin your brushing session by pressing the power button. The app shows a model of your teeth set on the display, and while you brush, it keeps a record of how much time you brush in each part, allows you know if you are moving the DiamondClean too much, and ensures you are not putting tooth much pressure.
Basically, it shows how to brush your teeth step by step, ensuring every tooth is sufficiently cleaned. This smart toothbrush contains a built-in accelerometer in the base for tracking the position of the toothbrush inside your mouth. The tracking works properly, but it can just register a specific quadrant at a time. And sometimes it might not track depending on the way you hold your toothbrush. For instance, when you are brushing your top teeth, sometimes it may not pick up how much time you have spent in the particular area.
Once a brushing session is finished, the app shows you which areas you didn’t brush and adds additional time to the timer. Then, you can go back and brush those areas. Furthermore, the app also asks whether you have brushed your teeth, tongue, and rinsed, and tracks that data.
Along with monitoring your every brushing session, the app also keeps data on your brushing habits over time so that you are able to see your improvements. If there is an area that didn’t get adequate cleaning time or has got too much pressure or is scrubbed, it will show up on the progress screen and you can correct the problem.
The tracking features of the app are helpful. However, it doesn’t show more extensive graphs and charts that allow you to see information such as how long you brushed, how many times you brushed, areas you missed to brush, and more. Currently, finding out this data just from a photo of your teeth set is a little bit hard.
In the app, not only you can track your daily brushing habits, you can also create specific goals and get reminders for brushing. Goals include gum care, plaque removal, fresh breath, whitening, and more. The app also contains options to point out problem areas such as gum recession, plaque build-up, cavities, and bleeding, and then the app will guide you so that you can focus more on those areas. Lastly, you can use the app to share the progress of your brushing with your dental professional and you can use the app to buy extra brush heads.
While the app is useful to learn how to brush properly and establishing a brushing routine, it is something you are not going to want to use it on a daily basis, because opening up the app and monitoring how you brush can be a hassle when you are in a rush to move out your house.
Unfortunately, if you don’t use the app, then the brush won’t track your brushing sessions completely and collect full data. Therefore, if you want to track your oral health over time, then using the app is a must. The app also contains some type of points system, but this feature is incomplete and not detailed. You may not understand the purpose of the points system.
Overall, some improvements are needed to the design of the app, how the data tracks, and the way the data displays, but the app is useful for developing and keeping good brushing habits.
DiamondClean Smart has 3 distinct models – 9500, 9300, 9700. The model reviewed here is the DiamondClean Smart 9500. All the units contain different prices and accessories, but they share the similar design and features.
The Sonicare 9300 is available in 4 colors – Pink, white, black, and a blue-gray shade. While the 9700 Series and 9500 series has 5 brushing modes, the Sonicare 9300 contains 4 brushing modes, removing the tongue brushing mode that connects with a tongue brush. The 9300 model comes with 3-brush heads – Gum care, whitening, and plaque control, and it doesn’t have a travel charger containing a built-in cord. It needs a separate charging cord such as older DiamondClean models.
The Sonicare 9500 series comes in pink, black, silver, and white. It contains 5 brushing modes and comes with 4-brush heads – Gum care, plaque control, whitening, and a tongue brush. It also ships with a higher-end travel charger having a built-in cord.
The Sonicare 9700 series is similar to the Sonicare 9500. However, it ships with an exclusive lunar blue color. Also, rather than having 4 brush heads, it has 7 brush heads – 2 Gum care, 3 plaque control, one tongue brush, and 2 whitening. It also has the high-end travel charger having a built-in cord.
Besides the travel charger, the number of brushes, and the Sonicare 9300 not having a tongue brush mode, the entire DiamondClean Smart models function similarly. Therefore, you can save some cost if you don’t require the travel charger or a tongue brush.
The DiamondClean Smart 9500 series toothbrush along with extra brush models is very pricey to pay for when you can buy a toothbrush for $2 at a drugstore. But in the long run, this type of upfront investment can save you money for treatments at the dentist. Even including the cost of replacement brush heads after a while is more affordable compared to dentist treatments. Remember, you have to replace the brush heads every 3-months.
The Sonicare DiamondClean Smart toothbrushes are highly recommended. They offer a much better clean, they are gentler on your gums, and they motivate you to brush for an optimal amount of time than you can get with a regular toothbrush. With good oral hygiene, your mouth will be healthy and free from dental plaque, cavities, gingivitis, and other dental problems.
The DiamondClean Smart toothbrush specifically is a perfect choice if you require reminders to brush your teeth, have problems in your mouth, or just want to track how you brush. Having a new design, separate intensity modes, and new brush heads, you can get an advanced brushing experience. Stick the DiamondClean Smart toothbrush in your mouth, move the brush where the app says you to move, and you are assured a full clean. It ships with additional brush heads, along with a travel charger, and all the features you could probably require.
In the long run, opening up the app and monitoring your brushing 2 or 3 times a day can be a hassle, but it is good to have it there whenever you require it. If you don’t require the app to encourage you to properly brush, Philips has more Sonicare brushes that are affordable and worth to check out. But if you want an excellent brushing experience, then the DiamondClean Smart is the toothbrush to have.
